Just one is ridiculously hard. I might have to go with “New York City Serenade” just because the cacophony of sounds, the piano, the guitar, his voice - every piece of it is poetic and beautiful. And where else can you hear the lyric, “Listen to your Junkman” and “Fish Lady” and get a clear visual of life in the city?
“Tell me your favorite Bruce Springsteen song and why. And you can pick only one!”
Oh shit son. That’s hard. I hate to sound like a cliche windbag, but Thunder Road will always be my favorite. It connects with me in some strange way. Like it’s speaking directly towards me and no-one else. I can’t even explain. It’s like Bruce is telling me that I shouldn’t ever sit around feeling sorry for myself. That I should put my faith in someone & have no reservations about anything. To let go and be free. In a way it’s a lot like Born To Run, “These two lanes will take us anywhere” kind of thing. And I’ve always felt connected to the feeling of wanting to get away and just leave everything else behind. Tearing down the highway & not looking back. And this song explains everything so perfectly. About how you should get up and do what you want, and don’t wait, and don’t let anyone hold you back. And so what if you’re scared, but you should “show a little faith, there’s magic in the night”.
